There have been regular releases of PHP specific books for several years now. However, only recently have PHP specific magazines started appearing in the market.
PHP Architect was the first commercial magazine to be released in a digital format, PDF. Fortunately, due to popular demand, the printed version of PHP Architect is now also available. This is a clear sign that the PHP community is healthy and growing. Currently, the PHP Architect printed version is only available to subscribers. However, the publisher, Marco Tabini & Associates, does plan to distribute it through normal magazine channels later. The current circulation number of 15,000 copies demonstrates that there is demand for PHP magazines at local news agents and kiosks. The content of the printed edition is exactly the same as the digital version. So, the main difference is in the convenience of taking the printed magazine anywhere you want without having to carry a computer with you. The magazine is very well structured. The most interesting part is called Features, which basically comprises in-depth articles about PHP or related Web development issues. The articles are often insightful and unique, in the sense that they talk about issues that are not covered in the freely accessible sites where PHP articles are published. This characteristic alone justifies the cost of the magazine for its readers. The rest of the magazine is made up of several short sections that are called Departments. They cover news of the PHP world or related matters in a sort of a digest, reviews of products and books of interest for PHP users, and comments about initiatives of interest that are going on at the moment. If you have been looking for a magazine dedicated exclusively to PHP and related matters, PHP Architect is a very satisfactory option. Its level of quality matches or surpasses that of other magazines which do not give you the PHP focus. The availability of a printed edition certainly addresses the needs of many users who prefer the convenience of reading on paper without going to the cost of printing the whole digital version on paper of a similar quality.
